Inaction on tackling plastic pollution under the Business as Usual Scenario could see annual virgin plastic production soar by 66%, from 430 million tonnes (Mt) in 2019 to 712 Mt in 2040, nearly doubling mismanaged plastics to 205 Mt and increasing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 63%, a trajectory which is incompatible with the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement.
